A new study suggests that a common male sexual health issue could be linked to men’s lower libido.
Researchers in the New England Journal of Medicine studied two studies that analyzed more than 2,000 men over the age of 40.
They compared them to older men who were treated with an SSRI, Viagra.
Men who were taking Viagra — which works by increasing blood flow to the penis — were 2.5 times more likely to have a low libido than those taking a placebo. However, Viagra was associated with lower sexual desire than placebo and also had a more severe effect on erection than Viagra.
The results are published in theJournal of Sexual Medicine.
Researchers also found that men who used SSRIs or sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, were less likely to report experiencing erectile dysfunction.
Both studies found that men who took SSRIs had a lower average number of satisfying sexual events — a measure of erectile function — than those who took placebo.
The researchers also looked at other factors that may affect the impact of sexual dysfunction on men.
They found that men who took SSRIs had a shorter duration of sexual activity compared to those who took a placebo.
“The findings were interesting because they suggest that erectile function may be linked to men’s lower libido,” Dr. Mark D. Rothblum, a urology professor at the University of Missouri, Columbia, and lead author of the study, wrote in an editorial.
“But the study doesn’t confirm that low sexual desire and erectile dysfunction are independently associated, so it is important to examine whether these are associated with different factors.”
A number of possible mechanisms by which men’s sexual function might affect men’s erectile function are still not understood.
However, researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, and at the University of California, Los Angeles, have studied how some of the factors that may influence erectile function, including sex hormones and lifestyle, affect sexual activity. These studies have shown that sex hormones affect the amount of blood flow in the penis.
One theory is that low levels of sex hormones can contribute to erectile dysfunction.
Other theories are that a specific hormone, called progesterone, promotes erectile function.
These could affect the size and strength of the penis, or a specific area in the body that’s larger than the penis.
“Some of the research we’ve done is showing that testosterone levels are lower in men who take testosterone,” Rothblum told, and published in
“I think we’ve found that that’s not really the case because there is an increased risk of having sexual dysfunction,” he said.
Rothblum said that some studies have found no link between sex hormones and sexual dysfunction.
“But the research we’ve done has not shown a link between low sex hormones and erectile function,” he said.
“So it’s important to have a discussion with your doctor about what the risks are, and what your chances are of experiencing a reduced sexual function,” he added.
The study was part of the research that followed 2,700 men from 1998 to 2006.
The researchers analyzed all of the data for their study to determine whether there was a link between sexual dysfunction and low sex drive.
“If you take a placebo, there is a small increased risk of low sex drive,” Rothblum said.
Rothblum and his colleagues then compared these results to two studies that looked at other ways men with sexual dysfunction might have lower sex drive.
The first study examined men who were taking sildenafil, a drug that helps relax the blood vessels in the penis.
The researchers compared the average number of satisfying sexual events (sex-related events, or SSEs) among men who took sildenafil to those taking a placebo, or a placebo containing no active ingredient.
Men taking the drug had a lower SSE than men who were taking a placebo, but also had a shorter duration of sexual activity.
The researchers found that those who took the drug had a lower SSE, while those who were taking a placebo and also had lower sex drive were still more likely to report sexual dysfunction.
A California man was sentenced Wednesday for allegedly buying fake Viagra pills from a pharmacy in the Northern California suburb of Alameda.
